I am not sure when this began.... so that will make it even more fun. However I have recently noticed that ultramon loads and then exits. No errors noted, no crash, no events generated in the event logs.
This is XP Pro SP2 and I know this used to work. I would bet it is a compatibility issue, but other than starting form scratch am not sure where to begin. So, is there an error log I can check? If not, can I get a debug version to see why it is exiting? I am currently running 2.7.1 but 3.0.2 also does the same thing.
Thanks, Kevin

Make sure error reporting is enabled, or at least the option to notify you of critical errors. This can be configured via Control Panel > System > Advanced > Error Reporting.
With the 3.0 beta you should get an error message for almost all initialization errors, 2.7.1 and earlier report less errors.
What happens if you launch UltraMon.exe, or UltraMonTaskbar.exe, manually from the installation folder, C:\Program Files\UltraMon?

No errors reported after enabling error reporting for all exe's in the ultramon folder.
When I double click the exe it launches, I see it in task manager briefly as well as on the taskbar, then it exits. No errors reported anywhere. Would upgrading back to 3.0.2 be more useful in debugging this?

Update: I notice that now UltraMonTaskbar.exe is hanging around in memory after launching ultramon from the Start Menu shortcut. Not sure what sparked that change in behavior.

Do you have any security software installed which might prevent UltraMon from running?
3.0.2 has better error reporting, but you mentioned that it also failed without error during initial testing.

No new security software. Same old Norton A/V. The only firewall I run is the XP built in version.
I have already began thinking it is a software conflict, but the software I have added since I last noticed it working are Orb, a different version of VNC server, and a few other utils, none of which run all the time. I did install some java based plugins for my Tivo that allow me to view and manipulate my Netflix and Amazon accounts. I guess I will have to stop things in an orderly fashion until I can get it to start again. I have already tried this with Orb and VNC, and then came here for other ideas before proceeding further.

When UltraMonTaskbar.exe remains running, do you actually get the additional taskbar(s)?

No, nothing happens - as if it is not running. I have found that that process does not always stay in memory either, just sometimes.
I will try to stop one app at a time next and see if I can get Ultramon to stay running, then report back in this thread if I can figure it out.
Is there any way to produce a log that might tell me why it is exiting (cleanly)?
If you have any other ideas on it they are welcome.
Thanks, Kevin

The only similar issue I remember was with Tiny firewall on 64-bit Windows, which caused UltraMon to exit immediately without an error being shown.
Some things you could try:
- open a command prompt and run UltraMon.exe with the /ds argument:
UltraMon.exe /ds
this should open the Display Settings dialog, without doing any of the regular initialization
- try to launch UltraMonDesktop.exe directly, this should open the wallpaper configuration dialog
If the above also doesn't work, it seems unlikely that this would be an issue with UltraMon.

Sorry for wasting your time on this one... turns out it was a malware (wintems.exe) - it was preventing all kinds of apps from starting, or at least starting correctly. It must have thought Ultramon was a securuty app of some sort. Of course if I had not started looking into Ultramon, I probably would have been living with this malware garbage (and the slowness I think I have gotten used to) for a long time still.
Thanks again for the assistance.
