or 4.5 drivers and control panel if your useing 44.90 or earlier drivers

some notes just incase ATI see this

the no direct 3d/draw issue on some driver combinations is to do with ati smart crashing (ati2sgag.exe)

also ati control panel fails to work with multiple cards (ati/nvidia) it crashes in the taskbar

when i first thaught this was an nvidia issue i contacted nvidia they where most keen and tried to resolve the problem
(thanks Nick Triantos + Joey Barrameda)

i have e-mailed ATI on this issue about 6 times since i have found out its an ati issue

guess what

No reply

Procedure for installing

6171 Nvidia Drivers and 4.3 Catalyst + 4.2 Control Panel

Install Catalyst 4.2 + Control Panel
Install 6171 Nvidia Drivers

enable monitors and set them up how you want them

then install 4.3 driver only

if you do it any other way the nvidia cards will fail to start

Thanks. I guess I won't be buying any ATI cards, at least not until they fix this problem with NVidia cards.

I have been having trouble with an ATI and Nvidia set up.
When I first install the Nvidia drivers both monitors work, but I can't get the tv tuner on the ati to work.
When I reboot the tv tuner works but the second monitor doesn't.
Do you think reverting to an old driver will fix that?

I've heard that the TV tuners in those cards only work in single-monitor systems. I think you need a separate TV tuner card.

I have a dual monitor setup with the ATI Radeon 8500DV and the Nvidia GeForce 2 mx 400.

ITS BEEN THE BIGGEST PAIN IN THE A$$ for two years of my life!!

Question: Have you tried using the SmartGart uninstaller that is available on the ATI website? http://ati.com/support/drivers/misc/catalystutils.html

ALSO: Im trying to understand your suggestion for installation proceedures. Are you saying you should install the Nvdia drivers first? Should you do this in the "Enable VGA Mode" that is available using F8 on bootup?

I can get both the monitors to work but I NEED the Open GL and D3D to work with some graphics software I use.

Thanks for any help...

oh, by the way...

ATI HAS GOT TO HAVE THE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE OF ANY COMPANY I HAVE EVER DEALT WITH.

If you email customer support and are lucky enough to get any response at all... the response will come weeks after you sent your email and will be a canned reply saying something about how they are not at fault. I have had many ATI issues that required customer support, but they are NEVER willing to help.

THANKS, ATI!

wow ati replied to you?

ive sent 11 messages to them now over about 4 months

not 1 reply

anyway

best thing to do is use catalyst 4.2 on the ati card and the latest nvidia driver on nvidia card

install any way you like

catalyst 4.2 is the last driver that dont F with nvidia cards
Shonk   2004-08-15 16:23
it wont be my concern for much longer anyway

ati can go shove it

gona be replaceing my 9800 pro with a nvidia 6800

and will be back to a 100% nvidia system thank god

i knew it was a mistake buying an ati but the price was just to good at the time compared to a nvidia 5900
Shonk   2004-08-15 17:21
oh ive been looking for something to remove smartgart as i knew that was what was mashing up the nvidia drivers

i didnt realise that ati had released something to remove it

ok i can now get

latest catalyst and latest nvidia's working together
i havnt done indepth testing but here's how i got it working

uninstall any nvidia drivers have no nvidia drivers installed at all

then upgrade to ati 4.9 or whatever
reboot
make sure ati smart runs and enables hardware accel on the ati
then run the smart uninstaller
reboot

install nvidia driver of your choice

all should be good
