Hello,
two days ago I shortly tested UltraMon 3.0.7 and then instantly purchased it - everything worked fine (apart from a small problem with the wallpapers, but I will post that in an additional thread), and I love this utility. :)
Now suddenly there are some problems during the Windows start. First, I get two identical messages that tell me about the supported command-line arguments. Well, I didn't change the UltraMon shortcut in the startup folder or anywhere else, so I don't know where this might come from.
The most annoying thing is that all programs that should be started via the startup folders ("All Users" and the one belonging to the current user) won't show up anymore. A look at the shortcuts tells me that UltraMon took possession of all of them - the target of all of these shortcuts is UltraMon.exe. This would be okay for me if UltraMon started those programs, but it doesn't.
My monitor setup:
2 monitors Current desktop: 2560x1024 (-1280,0 - 1280,1024)
Monitor 1 - L778 (primary): Settings: 1280x1024, 32-bit color, 60 Hz refresh rate Coordinates: 0,0 - 1280,1024. Workspace: 0,28 - 1280,964 Video card: ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series Device: \\.\DISPLAY1\Monitor1
Monitor 2 - LG L1942(Digital): Settings: 1280x1024, 32-bit color, 60 Hz refresh rate Coordinates: -1280,0 - 0,1024. Workspace: -1280,0 - 0,994 Video card: ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series Device: \\.\DISPLAY2\Monitor0
My OS is Windows XP Pro SP3.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Cheers, Jan

Unfortunately I don't know what might have caused this, UltraMon will never change shortcut targets to UltraMon.exe.
UltraMon will only change a shortcut target if you configure custom position or display settings for a shortcut (open Properties for the shortcut, then select the UltraMon - Window or UltraMon - Display tabs), but in that case the shortcut target will be UltraMonShortcuts.exe.

Thank you very much for your reply.
Well, I uninstalled UltraMon, and the shortcuts were reverted back to their original targets, but still they didn't work. So I removed all remaining UltraMon files, all entries in the registry and the device manager (UltraMon Utility Driver; it couldn't be deleted in the registry). I rebooted the computer, but the shortcuts didn't work. So I reinstalled UltraMon.
Then I used StartEd Pro to change the start method of the programs in the startup folder to "Current User Run". The programs started, so I tried to put the shortcuts back to the startup folder, and this time I had luck.
I have absolutely no idea why all of this happened, but I hope it won't occur again...
Could there be anything in the installation routine that could cause something like this?
Cheers, Jan

I'm not sure this is exactly an ultramon problem. I had every thing working just fine on my machine right up until...
Jan, I saw your post on StartEd Pro. A utility like that intrigued me. I was not interested in the Pro edition, but the Lite edition suited my needs. I downloaded and installed, and then edited a startup entry (specificly the entry for auto starting RivaTuner.exe that always reappears in my registry every time I edit my settings for RivaTuner. I start RT via TaskScheduler to avoid UAC alerts on startup. The registry entry will give me UAC alerts, so I delete that one.)
And... Viola I have the same symptoms that Jan describes.
On restart Items in the Startup folder will fail to start, giving UltraMon errors as described above. Additionally, UltraMon tries to start twice now.
I rebuilt my startup shortcuts, manually and my programs start normally.
But with no shortcut to start ultramon, It still starts twice for no reason. It would seem there is something out there that starts it twice and I can't find it. I deleted the shortcut to Ultramon.exe and created a shortcut to the only portion of UltraMon that I use everytime the computer runs UltramonTaskbar.exe.
I've looked in C:/Users/(current user)/AppData/Roaming/Microsoft/Windows/Start Menu/Startup, HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run, HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce, HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run, HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce, HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunBackup. I cannot find where these startups are coming from.
Where could these eroneous entries be? If I can find them and kill them, I think all will go back to normal. As it is right now, on reboot I get 3 Ultramon Taskbars and 2 Instances of Ultramon. If I exit the ultramons all goes back to normal, and I can start Ultramon.exe normally after that

From what jfb9301 wrote it sounds like this might be an issue with StartEd, uninstalling it should be worth a try.
Seems impossible that this would be related to UltraMon setup, UltraMonShortcuts.exe does change the target for previously customized shortcuts, but in that case the target would always be UltraMonShortcuts.exe, not UltraMon.exe.

I'm using StartEd since September 2004 now, for almost five years. There has never been any problem with it. And I use it quite often to change my startup configuration. It may be that it is responsible for the problem - but only in combination with UltraMon, as it seems.
@jfb9301: As I said, I changed the start method of the programs in the startup folder to "Current User Run" - including UltraMon. When I changed them back, I let UltraMon's start method set to "Current User Run". Now on my computer everything works as expected.

Looks like the 2 shortcuts in the all users startup folder were the culprits.
Fixed them and all was good.
now that I know how to patch things up, I'll give start ed another look, after I back up my startup shortcuts.

As I said, I never had any problems with it in all these years. I'm sorry you encountered the same problems as I did with the combination of StartEd and UltraMon (although it made things clearer for me ;-) ), but I wouldn't have recommended a tool that I didn't consider to be totally secure.

If you have troubles with 2 Ultramons starting up, I seem to have found the cause:
When I put up a shortcut to UltraMon in All Users ( C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup ) It starts up twice (or even more, possibly creating even more extra taskbars)
However... when I put up the shortcut only in Current User/Startup ( C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup ) Everything works just fine and I only get 1 version.
--- In short: remove the shortcut(s) in "All Users/Start Up" , and put one shortcut in "Current User/Start Up"
Hope this helps :)
P.S. also check: [Start] --> [Run] --> ["msconfig"] --> ["Start up"] to see if your current settings will run it twice, easier to check here than actually rebooting the pc all the time ;)

funny thing... it worked for 3 times, and then without even touching any settings, the 4th time suddenly I had 2 instances of UltraMon running after reboot again. :(
P.S. I have no additional managers running, just windows vista, virtual DAEMON, and a sound thingy of the onboard audio, clean install otherwise.
guess that means the former post is useless
